Repeat Prescriptions

You can receive repeat prescriptions without the need to see a doctor each time.

Your GP will decide how many prescriptions to authorise before asking to see you again.  If you are due to have a review with your GP we will add a message to the last prescription.  Please book your appointment with plenty of time so that you don't run out of tablets.

If you are on more than 2 regular medications, it may be cheaper for you to purchase a prepayment certificate - you can apply here online or speak to your pharmacist.

Some patients are entitled to help with health costs including free prescriptions, this leaflet has more information.

Repeat prescriptions can be requested in the following ways:

  • Using our online service
  • Using the printed repeat order form which is attached to each prescription - this can be posted; put through the door; brought into the surgery, or faxed on 01582 475766.
  • Prescriptions will normally be ready within 2 working days of request.  You can collect in person or enclose a stamped addressed envelope for us to post back to you. If you are housebound, all the local chemists offer a collection and delivery service.

Please note: we do not accept telephone requests for repeat prescriptions for safety reasons, nor can our receptionists issue medications that have not been authorised (on repeat) by a doctor.

Tests Results

For results of blood tests, cervical smears and other specimens please telephone after 11.30am or call at reception.  We regret all children under 15yrs must attend the hospital for blood tests. We do not routinely contact patients with normal test results (except cervical smear results).
If you ask the doctor at the time of arranging the blood test, and provide a mobile phone number, our system allows blood test results to be sent by text message.

Blood Pressure Checks

Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases the risk for stroke and heart disease.  High blood pressure may not give any symptoms; you may not know it is raised.  We recommend everyone over the age of 40 should have their blood pressure checked and at least every 5 years.  Our nurses and doctors can provide a general health check including blood pressure and cholesterol check, and provide feedback on how you can reduce your risk.  Please ask one of our receptionists to book you an appointment for a health check.

New Patient Health Checks

If you We ask all new patients to make an appointment for a general health check (blood pressure, urine specimen, family history of heart diseases etc) with the GP or practice nurse when registering with the practice. Medical records can take many weeks to transfer from your old GP so this will allow us to record basic health information and add any repeat medication while we are waiting for your records to arrive.

Travel Immunisation

The practice nurse will advise and arrange for foreign immunisations. It is advisable to make an appointment well in advance of your journey. Please note that not all immunisations for travel are available under the NHS. Our nurses can give you details of a local Travel Clinic for non NHS services.

Family Planning

All doctors are qualified to provide a full range of contraceptive advice.  Our nurses can also carry out follow up pill checks. Coil fitting requires an initial appointment for discussion with Dr Peters. You will then need to arrange another appointment with Dr Peters & a nurse for the fitting.

The contraceptive implant requires specific training, and this service is provided at the family planning clinic based at Kirby Road Surgery.

Immunisations

Patients are invited to bring their babies and young children to the surgery for their vaccinations and immunisations. Please make an appointment with a Practice Nurse, following guidelines from your health visitor.

All adults should be immunised against tetanus every 10 years and for some occupations it is recommended to have protection against other diseases.

Flu injections

Flu immunisations are recommended for the following:

  • Patients aged 65 and over
  • Patients with respiratory, heart, kidney or liver disease or diabetes
  • pregnant women
  • Patients in residential care
  • Main carers

The flu jab is available from the beginning of October - please make an appointment with the practice nurse.

  • Blood Pressure
  • Heart Disease
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Blood Pressure Checks
  • Smear Tests
  • Dressings
  • Ear SyringingStop Smoking
  • Stop Smoking

Our nurses run stop smoking clinics. You need to make a 20 minute appointment at a time convenient to you to initially discuss your desire to QUIT. At that meeting the nurse will explain what will happen at each appointment and how she can support you through the procedure.

Private Medical Certificates and Examinations

The doctors are happy to sign private certificates, private health insurance forms and holiday cancellation forms etc. A fee will be charged for this use of doctor's time. They will also perform private medicals, eg HGV, PSV, elderly driver, fitness to undertake sports and pre-employment medicals - these will require special appointments.

Please check our non-nhs services pagefor our current charges

Carers

We are interested in identifying carers, especially those who may be caring without help or support. If you are a carer please ask at reception for a referral form and more details about where you can get support.

Extended Hours

The general practice contract is to provide NHS services between 08h00 and 18h00 on weekdays.  We have agreed to offer additional hours of service to improve access to health care.  These appointments include GP, nurse and blood test appointments.
GP appointments: Tues, Wed, Thurs evenings, Tuesday and Friday mornings.  Nurse appointments on Wed and Thursday evenings.  Blood test appointments on tuesday mornings.

NHS Health Checks

As part of the campaign to reduce heart disease, we are offering health checks and advice on how to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Alcohol screening

Excessive alcohol intake causes significant health problems and results in large numbers of admissions for resulting complications.  Newly registered patients are asked to complete a short questionnaire on alcohol and its effects.  This is scored and advice is given to those at risk of health problems related to alcohol.

Learning Disability Annual Reviews

People with learning disabilities are known to be at higher risk for multiple health problems and premature death.  This group is also known to be less likely to seek health advice.  These health checks provide the practice the opportunity to pro-actively review the health of these individuals, their medications and discuss issues that they may feel too embarrassed to ask about (such as contraception).
