Research Active Practice
West Street Surgery is a Research Active Practice. This means that we carry out medical research at the practice.
This research can take many different forms such as asking patients and staff to fill in questionnaires, patients being sent invitations to join a research study, to patients being recruited during appointments with clinicians.

Impulse Control in Parkinson's Disease
The University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is seeking individuals with Parkinson’s disease who are either not yet taking medication or taking Ropinirole to be part of a research study looking at mechanisms which control movement.
Eligible patients that sign up to the study will be asked to attend two 3-hour sessions at the University of Birmingham. For those that attend, compensation is paid at £10/hr for time and travel expense.

Child Parent Screening Pilot Information - Hypercholesterolaemia
A quick and easy heel prick test for children aged 1-2.
West Street Surgery will be inviting children aged 1-2 to take part in the study. Out nurses have had specialist training and will be able to provide you with more information. The flyer below will answer some of your questions.
Since starting the trial at the beginning of May 2024 we have already had a greet uptake.

MASLD
MASLD (fatty liver disease) occurs when there is excess fat in the liver. It affects 1 in 3 men & 1 in 4 women in UK. The main causes of MASLD are obesity & type 2 diabetes. While there is no drug treatment for MASLD, weight loss can reverse disease progression.
The Liverpool research team are looking for research participants that are over 18 and living with being overweight or type 2 diabetes or has a diagnosis of fatty liver disease (MASLD). Patients will be asked to join a discussion group for 30mins – 2hours and will be paid £25/hr for their time via an amazon voucher.
